Correctly identifying grub damage and taking swift/preventative action will save home owners money by stopping the grub infestation before extensive damage occurs and complete lawn replacement is required.

Fast Facts:

  • Damage shows up in Fall and Spring.
  • Preventative treatment is required.
  • Once damage begins, affected areas will not recover.

The first signs of Grub damage will often appear in the Fall and Spring.  Home owners may notice that patches of grass have been     turned over by animals who are foraging for food.   Closer inspection will reveal that the grass is easily pulled up like carpet revealing white grubs beneath; this is due to the fact that grubs feed on the plant root system.  This destruction of the plant roots will result in the grass not being able to uptake moisture, nutrients, and makes it susceptible to uprooting.

What Can I Do?

Due to the devastating nature of this damage, and the fact that the majority of the damage occurs over the winter when the lawn is not visible, it is important that home owners take regular preventative measures when adult beetles are in flight - Late June through August.

We recommend that a grub reducer treatment be applied in late August/early September.  This is the time when most grub species are susceptible pest control measures. grubGone is an effective novel bio-insecticide which protects turfgrass by reducing grub population.

Thomas Lawn Care offers grubGone treatments that are specifically designed to infect grubs including the grubs we have here in Ottawa: the european chafer beetle grub.
