What is a chinch bug?
Chinch bugs are black with a white spot on their back between their wing pads. Adult chinch bugs have white wings folded over their backs, and are 4 mm (.16 inches) in length. The immature chinch bug (the nymph) is bright red with distinctive white bands across the back. As it matures, its colouring will change from reddish-orange to brown, and finally black. Nymphs do not have wings.
What does chinch bug damage look Like?
The first signs of chinch bug damage will often appear in early Summer. Home owners may notice that small brown patches begin to appear in early June. These patches will expand and continue to grow through out the Summer as the heat increases.
Chinch bugs are tiny and sometimes difficult to see, but if you look closely in this photo you can see the reddish nymphs with distinctive white bands across their backs.
What Can I Do?
Since chinch bugs only attack the blade of the grass, it is important that treatment of the turf begin as soon as the damage is noticed. A chinch bug infestation, if left unchecked, can destroy large portions of grass in a matter of weeks.
It is important that home owners take immediate measures as soon as damage is noticed!
